Senior Mechanical Designer
Location: House of BioHealth, Luxembourg
Type: Full-time
Role Overview
We're looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer who thrives on designing hardware that has to survive launch, vacuum, and orbit. You'll lead the mechanical design of payload systems for our Orbital High-Throughput Screener (OHTS), turning ambitious space-based drug-discovery science into flight-ready hardware alongside our electrical, thermal, and systems teams.
Responsibilities
Lead the mechanical design and development of payload systems for space station applications, ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards, including ISS-specific guidelines.
Create detailed 3D models and technical drawings, applying appropriate tolerances and material specifications to ensure functionality and reliability in the space environment.
Conduct reviews of relevant standards and specifications to ensure the payload design meets all necessary criteria for space station integration.
Understand static and dynamic structural simulations to validate the mechanical integrity of the payload under various operating conditions, including launch, deployment, and in-orbit scenarios.
Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical, thermal, and systems engineers, to integrate the mechanical design with other subsystems.
Support the selection of payload structural materials.
Contribute to the payload mechanical assembly process.
Prepare and maintain comprehensive documentation, including assembly instructions, test procedures, and engineering reports.
Troubleshoot and resolve design issues during the development, testing, and integration phases, ensuring timely delivery of the payload.
Liase with suppliers and subcontractors.
REquirements
At least five years of experience as a mechanical designer using CAD software like Solidworks or CATIA.
Ability to interpret and apply standards in the design and development process.
Experienced in mechanical assembly processes
Strong skills in preparing and maintaining technical documentation, including drawings, assembly instructions, and engineering reports.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Possess the legal right to work in Luxembourg (visa, residency, or work permit).
(Advantageous but not required) Experience working in the space industry, particularly with ISS standards.
(Advantageous but not required) Proven ability to perform structural simulations using tools like ANSYS or NASTRAN.
(Advantageous but not required) Strong understanding of the unique mechanical challenges associated with space station payloads, including microgravity effects and launch vibrations.
