Embedded Systems Engineer (FPGA & Firmware)
Location: House of BioHealth, Luxembourg
Type: Full-time
Role Overview
We’re looking for an Embedded Systems Engineer (FPGA & Firmware) who’s comfortable close to the metal and excited about building robust, safety-critical systems for space applications—spanning embedded firmware, FPGA bring-up, and HW/SW co-design.
Responsibilities
Design, implement, and maintain embedded firmware for our payloads and supporting ground systems.
Develop, integrate, and debug device drivers and board support packages (BSPs) for custom electronics and FPGA-based platforms.
Contribute to FPGA/firmware integration: define interfaces, map registers, validate data paths, and support end-to-end bring-up.
Work with real-time operating systems (RTOS) to implement deterministic, reliable control and data handling.
Implement and validate communication stacks on top of protocols such as UART, SPI, PCIe, USB, and CAN.
Support high-throughput data movement and control loops across FPGA ↔ MCU/CPU ↔ peripherals, including test tooling and debug.
Collaborate closely with electronics, systems, and science teams to define interfaces and ensure end-to-end system reliability.
Participate in code reviews, requirements discussions, and documentation for flight and ground software.
If you bring project coordination experience, you may also:
Help plan and track firmware/FPGA work packages, milestones, and deliverables.
Coordinate small cross-functional efforts (e.g., between software, electronics, and science teams).
Contribute to improving development processes, roadmaps, and release planning.
Requirements
5+ years of experience with embedded systems and low-level firmware development (drivers, BSPs, hardware bring-up).
Practical experience with FPGA design and development (VHDL/Verilog, synthesis, timing closure).
Proven experience developing low-level firmware in C/C++ (or similar) on custom hardware.
Experience working with RTOS environments (e.g., FreeRTOS, RTEMS, VxWorks, or similar).
Preferred Qualifications
Solid understanding of system-level integration and debugging using tools such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG.
Experience with HW/SW co-design, including memory-mapped register design, DMA/data pipelines, and latency/throughput optimization.
Experience with FPGA-SoC platforms (e.g., Xilinx Zynq/Versal, Intel SoC FPGA) and associated toolchains.
Software quality practices, particularly:
Unit testing frameworks for embedded systems
CI/CD pipelines
Experience working with SPARC architectures.
Experience in space software development (ECSS standards, radiation effects, fault tolerance, flight software constraints).
Experience coordinating deliverables across partners/suppliers.
